Local Roundup: Marauders Roll in Opener

Friday, December 16, 2016

The Hanover High girls basketball team, playing without three standouts from last season’s team, showed Friday that it’s still a force with which to be reckoned. The Marauders routed visiting Bow, 52-29.

Reserve point guard Maddie McCorkle had 13 points to lead the Marauders during their opener. McCorkle, the daughter of Dartmouth College associate head football coach Sammy McCorkle, saw extensive action with starting point guard Diana Schwarz in foul trouble.

Sophomore Julia Golder had 14 points and 12 rebounds and freshman Willa Parkins had six points and 10 rebounds for Hanover, which features five freshmen and two sophomores on a roster that returns only four players from last season. The top two scorers from that campaign, Silke Milliman and Caroline Merguerian, departed for prep school and another starter, Lois Schwarz, underwent surgery for a torn knee ligament during August.

“Everyone contributed tonight,” said coach Dan O’Rourke, whose team next plays Wednesday against visiting Lebanon. “It’s going to have to be by committee because we have so many young players.”

Freshman Bella Bardales had seven points and classmate Ella Edmonds had five for the Marauders.
